This is incorrect. Compensation intermediate event just links an activity to its compensating (undoing) activity. It is not a sequence flow, just an association to a single activity. The compensation occurs only when either a compensation signal is thrown by a compensation end event or by a cancel intermediate event attached to the boundary of the surrounding transactional subprocess. In your diagram, Check Credit would not have a compensating activity. Something like Charge Customer might have a compensating activity Credit Customer, and the signal to compensate might be thrown after some condition such as item is out of stock.

I am not sure if I understand your point. Once a compensation event is triggered, what would happen next is entirely a modeler choice. Will it result in triggering a diferent sequence flow or will it come and join the regular flow are two equally plausible and correct alternatives.
I agree that instead of "check credit", "charge customer" is probably a better example. However, once the compensating activity "Credit Customer" is triggered, there are two alternatives:
1. We end the process - this is similar to the use case you are targeting - Compensation end event.
2. There is also another use case, where in , we can "check with partners" if they have it in stock, or look at my supply chain and "create a backlog order" for this item. This might be a more common example for complex enterprise processes.
The second use case is what I have tried to address in this example.
